What is Cyber Security?

In this age of technology and communication, you can't help but get involved in technologies and innovations that revolve around computers, smartphones and the Internet. But as we go around our daily lives with these technologies and innovations, there are times when we start to think about the safety aspect. It may be our physical safety or the safety of our personal hardware and software. Cyber Security can be termed as protecting our personal information or any kind of digital asset stored in the computer.

Threats related to Cyber Security

One important thing to understand is, the type of threats that you could come across in the cyber space. There are different types of threats and each of them has their own level of seriousness which requires have their own level of solutions. The higher the threat level, the more advanced or complicated the approach is, to implement safety measures to protect yourself from such a threat.

From simple malicious codes, otherwise known as malware and spyware to serious viruses that can erase entire contents on your computer and hackers that can access and use your personal information for their own personal gain; these are the risks that you will need to address.

Why is Cyber Security Important?

Using the Internet has become an integral part of life in the modern world. From communication via email and instant messaging to traveling, banking and shopping, nearly every aspect of our life revolves around the cyber space. Because the Internet is so widely used, protecting vital information in cyberspace is a necessity and it's our responsibility.

Unauthorized users, commonly known as hackers, have a wide variety of tools to harm a computer system. They usually gain access to systems by planting some sort of virus somewhere on the Internet and waiting for the users to encounter or open the virus. Common ways in which a computer can be infected are:

  • Opening an email attachment that contains a virus
  • Visiting a malicious website
  • Clicking on a malicious link
  • Downloading a malicious program

Infected systems can be affected and damaged in a variety of ways. Hackers may attempt to steal personal and vital information like Credit Card Numbers, Social Security Numbers and other personal information. Hackers can even use the infected system as a medium to launch a bigger attack on a larger system.

How to be secure in Cyber Space?

Most hackers use some kind of a malicious logic to exploit vulnerabilities in software and gain unauthorized access to computer systems. Hence it is very important to install and update anti-virus, anti-spyware and firewall software on the system. Since new vulnerabilities are found in the computer systems every day. It is important to patch these vulnerabilities on a regular basis by issuing a series of system updates.

Some other basic security measures include:

  • Creating a strong password that has at least 8-9 characters, contains a capital letter, uses
a special character and includes a number.
  • Back up information on your computer on a regular basis.
  • Scan your computer for viruses, spyware and other vulnerabilities on a routine basis.
  • Only visit websites that you trust and open email attachments only from known contacts.
